Sukhothai, the “Dawn of Happiness” first capital of Thailand was established in 1238 by two Thai Chieftains, Pho Khun Pha Muang and Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao. Sukhothai, soon after its foundation, has expanded quickly its influence and power in all directions. Today, the evocative ruins of Sukhothai show a certain material prosperity and an artistic richness. This old kingdom is remembered today for its Buddhism art and architecture. It was in 1283 that king Ramkhamhaeng created Thai script. He then ordered in 1292 stone engraving telling his history and the history of his kingdom. Nowadays the magnificence of this post kingdom is classified “world heritage” by UNESCO.
